Bora-Care is a concentrated termiticide, insecticide and fungicide treatment that can be applied to all wood during the dried-in phase of construction. When applied, it diffuses into the wood and remains there for the life of the wood. Termites cannot consume, live in or tube over treated wood. Treatment also provides protection against wood decay, carpenter ants and wood boring beetles. In areas where termite pretreatments are necessary, Bora-Care can be used as a replacement for soil termiticides. Instead of creating a thin barrier of toxic chemicals in the soil, Bora-Care uses the structure itself to prevent infestations. Bora-Care’s active ingredient is a borate mineral salt that is no more toxic than table salt (in laboratory settings). Once applied to wood, Bora-Care diffuses into the wood and remains in the wood for the life of the wood, providing long-term protection.

What does the Research Say?

More than 300,000 effectively treated homes can’t be wrong.

More than 300,000 effectively treated homes can’t be wrong. Twelve years of efficacy studies to determine Bora-Care’s ability to prevent termites and other wood-eating insects have shown that Bora-Care eliminates wood as a food source for termites. In addition, hundreds of studies have confirmed the effectiveness of borates as a preservative, including more than 40 studies confirming its wood-protecting power.

Studies have shown that just a 2% weight loss from wood decay can reduce the wood strength by as much as 50%. Bora-Care kills and prevents wood decay fungi.

Benefits of Specifying Bora-Care

  1. Soil termiticides can cause CPVC plumbing pipes to leak. Bora-Care is the first termiticide listed as chemically compatible with Noveon piping systems. Bora-Care replaces old-fashioned soil termiticides and has been found to be compatible with the CPVC materials of FlowGuard Gold®, BlazeMaster®, and Corzan® pipe and fittings. FGG/BM® System Compatible indicates that this product has been tested and is monitored on an ongoing basis to assure chemical compatibility. In addition, Bora-Care will not corrode metal fasteners, fittings or nails.
  2. The Sustainable Green Solution. With soil termiticides there is always the concern of chemicals leaching into a nearby water source. The chemicals used in soil termiticides are showing up in trace amounts lakes, rivers and aquifers. Bora-Care can be used on lakeside homes where soil termiticides may be prohibited because when you pretreat the wood and concrete with Bora-Care, that’s ALL you treat and the treatment provides residual protection for years. Studies show that soil termiticides begin to lose their effectiveness within the first year. This means a structure will require many treatments during the life of the structure.
  3. Residential builders are saving a full day of cycle time by switching to Bora-Care pretreats. Builders love Bora-Care because it eliminates the need to coordinate schedules between cement companies and pest management professionals (PMPs). With old style soil termiticides, the application must be made after the footers are dug and before the concrete is poured, which is usually a very tight window of time. Bora-Care is applied anytime during the dried-in phase of construction.
  4. Bora-Care eliminates weather delays. Traditional soil treatments require application to dry ground. Bora-Care is applied directly to the wood and concrete on walls, subfloors, sill plates, piers and expansion joints, as well as around pipe chases and plumbing during the dried-in stage of construction. Weather is simply not a factor.
  5. Bora-Care eliminates the need for crews to leave the job site. In traditional soil pretreatments, workers are required by law to leave the site during application and stay away until the application is completed. With Bora-Care, the builders’ crews can keep right on working.
  6. HUD allows Bora-Care treatments. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) 99-A form allows wood treatments with EPA registered products such as Bora-Care, a primary termite treatment for new home construction.
  7. Efficacy tests show proven results. Research from a 12-year study by the USDA Forest Service and Mississippi State University’s Forest Products Laboratory showed wood treated with Bora-Care stopped termite attacks and prevented subterranean termites from tubing over treated wood. In addition, tests conducted at Louisiana State University have shown that Bora-Care applied to concrete surfaces will prevent Formosan termite tubing. Treated wood is also protected against carpenter ants, old house borers, powderpost beetles and decay fungi.
  8. International building code. Bora-Care has been evaluated for use under the International Building Code and the International Residential Code. Bora-Care meets the sill plate end-cut requirements set by building codes and the American Wood-Preservers’ Association (AWPA M4).
  9. Excavation and landscaping do not affect the treatment. Leaky water lines, improper drainage and even the landscaping process can break a soil termiticide barrier, rendering soil pretreatments ineffective by the time the house is complete. With Bora-Care, you’re treating the wood, and once again, a problem is eliminated.

For Protection against subterranean Termites

A 1+1 solution of water and Bora-Care is applied by the pest control company in a 2-foot band around the home to prevent infesations by subterranean termites. The structure is sprayed with a continuous two foot barrier wherever the home comes into contact with the foundation. Additionally, plumbing and other foundation penetrations, concrete and bath traps are also treated.

For Drywood termites and Wood Decay

The pest control company can apply a 5+1 solution of water and Bora-Care to all structural wood to protect against drywood termites, wood decay and other insects.

Green Building Advatnages

Treatments with Bora-Care can qualify a builder for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) points under sections 2.2.7 and 2.2.8. Other green building programs offer similar point systems. And speaking of “green”, Green Builder Magazine® selected Bora-Care for its inaugural Overall Grand Prize, Best of Show award at the 2006 National Green Building Show
